When a car is sold at a Japanese auction, an independent inspector grades it and records its condition on an official document — the auction sheet. It notes the car’s overall grade, mileage, interior rating, and a map of any damage or repairs. Because the inspector is independent, a genuine auction sheet is one of the most trustworthy vehicle history reports in the world.

Understanding auction grades

The overall grade is the quickest way to judge a car:

• S / 6 — almost new, near-perfect condition.
• 5 — excellent, minimal wear.
• 4.5 — very good with light cosmetic marks.
• 4 — good, normal wear for its age.
• 3.5 and 3 — average to below-average; expect repairs.
• R / RA — a repaired accident vehicle.
• 0 or *** — heavily modified or damaged; proceed with caution.

Why verification matters

Here’s the problem: auction sheets can be faked. A dealer can attach a clean sheet from a different car, or alter the mileage and grade to make a vehicle look better than it is. Verifying the original sheet against the chassis number confirms you’re looking at the real history — not a doctored one.
